Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City arrived! I

We all like a good deal and the Xbox 360 has seen its share of good packaged deals in terms of add-ons to our favorite games whether it's double expansion packs for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion or Fallout 3. Still, all of these packages pale in comparison to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City … a packaged deal that will make you glad you bought an Xbox 360. Oh yeah, it's just that good.

Episodes from Liberty City includes both The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony all on one disc that features two very different stories that interconnect with Niko Bellic's story from Grand Theft Auto IV. Interestingly enough, this packaged bundle doesn't even require you to own a copy of GTA IV. You can simply pop the disc into your Xbox 360 and play both games off the disc. This alone already makes it a great deal for those who no longer have a copy of GTA IV.

A word of gameplay advice: you’re going to want to keep a Rogue in your group. The Rogue’s lockpicking skill is the only way to open locked chests. Dragon Age has no version of Dungeons & Dragons’ venerable “Knock” spell, nor can you forcibly open chests as you could in the Baldur’s Gate series. Yes, you can slay demons and dragons a-plenty, but a lowly locked chest will vex you if you venture without a Rogue.

Romance also remains present per the BioWare formula, and hence you have opportunities to establish relationships in Dragon Age — including a homosexual relationship. It’s encouraging to see a major developer delve into same-sex relationships; we appreciate how BioWare’s attempting to expand the roles of our characters in role-playing games. we do wonder how gay men and women view this — as a welcome addition, or a clumsy attempt at initiating a same-sex relationship?

It does sadden me that in crafting such a well-made RPG, BioWare leaned a little too much on its inspiration and tired fantasy tropes. This is the first fantasy world that BioWare’s created from scratch, and at times, the cited influence of George R.R. Martin’s fantastic “A Song of Ice and Fire” series is a bit too obvious. The Grey Wardens and their sworn enemy, the Darkspawn, feel a bit too similar to Martin’s Night’s Watch guarding the realm of Westeros from the supernatural Others. Political machinations plunge Ferelden into a civil war — just like in “A Song of Ice and Fire.”

Other aspects of the BioWare formula — epic story, interesting characters, and a good sense of humor — are stronger in Dragon Age than in any of the developer’s games since Baldur’s Gate 2. After settling your origin, you set off on a grandiose quest to stop the Darkspawn. Twisted creatures created from a taint that turns humanoids into ravenous killers, the Darkspawn boil out of their tunnels under the world in a Blight — led by an archdemon (this one takes the form of a dragon). The only force that can stop the Blight is the Grey Wardens, selfless warriors who accept the taint in a mysterious ritual to forge a mystical connection that helps them battle the Darkspawn.

As you seek to defeat the Darkspawn, you pick up an assortment of characters determined to help you defeat the threat — or seeking to accomplish other goals. Some are do-gooders looking to make the world a better place. Others are banishing demons of their own. And one harbors their own plans. While none are as memorable as BG2’s Minsc or HK-47 from Knights of the Old Republic, each character leaves a stamp on the story — and some are downright integral to its plot. Unlike some party-based RPGs, where you can play through the campaign without exploring certain characters, we found ourselves sadly constrained by only having three other characters in my party. While we admit that tactical advantages are a good argument for six-character parties, we honestly wanted more characters in our party in order to experience them, as gamers did in BG2.

Championed as the “spiritual successor” to Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (widely considered one of the best fantasy role-playing games of all time), Dragon Age: Origins carries a great deal of expectations. Big-budget RPGs are becoming rarer and rarer in this world of social gaming, online piracy, and console games that require multimillion-dollar development budgets.

Further refining the BioWare approach to RPGs — tight storylines, strong character development, satisfying tactical combat, and a balance between epic storytelling and light, humorous moments — Dragon Age not only lives up to its pedigree, and it also shows that BioWare remains the preeminent developer of RPGs in the West.

The most significant refinement to the BioWare formula is the “origins.” These aren’t glorified tutorials, either. Each origin, which is based on your character race and class (and similar to the Pre-Service History and Psychological Profile aspects from Mass Effect’s character creation), effectively introduces the player-character to the realm of Ferelden. I played as an Elven mage for this review, and in my origin, I learned how Ferelden keeps its wizards under tight rein, and some of the history behind this draconian treatment. I’m interested in not only replaying the Elven mage origin (to see how the story changes if I make different choices), but I’m also excited to play the other five origins. An effective tutorial helps you learn how to play the game; these origins make you feel like you’re part of the story, and even have repercussions that carry through to the end of the game.

Updates On the fantastic PCgame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 III

After Activision announced better-than-expected earnings today, its executives held a conference call with analysts. During the call, they made the not-so-surprising revelation that the company is planning to release new installments in its tent-pole game franchises. “In [calendar year] 2010, Activision Publishing is expected to release strong, innovative new titles,” Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith told analysts. “The diversified lineup will include titles based on the best selling franchises including Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Shrek, [and] Spider-Man.”

While the Shrek game will be a tie-in with the forthcoming computer-animated film Shrek Forever After, little is known about the new Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, or Spider-Man titles. However, the next Spider-Man movie won’t be released until 2011 at the earliest, meaning that the next game, first revealed in August, will likely be comic-book based.

That said, there is a fair amount of information–and even more speculation–about the next Call of Duty game. In May, an employee at Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch accidentally revealed that “Call of Duty 7″ was already “in production,” presumably for the series’ traditional holiday release window.

Updates On the fantastic PCgame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 II

The graphics in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 are based on the IW 4.0 engine which is the same as in the previous game. There have been some tweaks to improve a few things but these aren't really noticeable. The graphics are very similar to the original game but the original was pretty top notch so needless to say Modern Warfare 2 looks awesome! To accompany good graphics you need good sound. Connect this bad boy up to a surround sound system and prepare to be blown away. The bullets whip past; the bombs make you duck in your seat. It all adds together to make you feel like you are out there with gun in hand.

As with the previous Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gives you access to a variety of weaponry to play with. Every weapon has been carefully detailed and it is a joy to use them, as it should be for any first person shooter.We’ve played many FPS games but Modern Warfare 2 has set the bench mark much higher. It is so easy and enjoyable to play that all other FPS games pale by comparison.

There are fast bits and stealthy bits, bits that get your heart racing and bits where you have to use your head. Combine the ease of play with amazing weapons, great sound and graphics, and storey line that keeps you on the edge of your seat and you know you are onto a winner

If we had any bad point to say about Modern Warfare 2 it would be the time it takes to complete it. You can be easily finished with the game within a days playing, which, when you consider the cost seems a bit poor. we don't think it is just Modern Warfare 2 that suffers from this though as nearly every other FPS we've played is the same. On the bright side the game includes good multiplayer modes as well though that should allow for many hours of quality gaming.

Updates On the fantastic PCgame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 I

The build up to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been ongoing for many months now helped along by controversial scenes that have been the talk of the internet (more on that later). The original Modern Warfare ended with the demise of Imran Zakhaev. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 introduces his associate, Vladimir Makarov, the head of a Russian terrorist group. Makarov is hell bent on causing world wide chaos and is organising attacks to provoke global conflict.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set fives years ahead of where the original game left of and is centred around a group setup to deal with Makarov called Task Force 141. You play a member of the Task Force 141 team and your aim is to bring an end to Makarov's reign of terror.

The game has an engrossing storey line that flows perfectly. Very few games make you feel more part of the action then Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. There are times when you forget that you are sat in your living room, it is that good. Whilst we're on the storey line we best cover the controversial element of the game that has been much talked about on the net. The US Entertainment Software Rating Board released a report about the scene which involves gunning down civilians.

The report describes the airport terror mission as "the most intense depiction of violence" in the game. The level involves gunning down "several civilians" with the player "given a choice to participate in the killings (e.g. players can shoot a wounded civilian that is crawling on the ground), or walk by and observe without opening fire."

The ESRB report goes on to reveals that whatever you select "civilians scream and emit pools of blood as they are shot to death." This level of sheer violence is no doubt the reason for Infinity Ward's decision to allow players to simply opt out of playing the level entirely. Having played the level we think it will cross the line for what many think is acceptable even if it is only a game but ultimately it is down to the individual to decide as you do have the option.
